Dear Buttons,

It’s that time of the week once again: menu planning time!

The Basics of How to Menu Plan for Dinner
Get out pencil, paper, and the sales flyer to your favorite store. Write down the following on paper.

  • Grocery Shopping day is on __________________
    • Tip: Go shopping the same day each week. Take advantage of store sales.
  • Meal Planning Day is on _____________________
    • Tip: Meal plan a day or two before grocery day.
  • Meat Schedule for the Week:
    • Monday _________________
    • Tuesday _________________
    • Wednesday _________________
    • Thursday _________________
    • Friday _________________
    • Saturday _________________
    • Sunday _________________
      • Tip: Don’t worry about recipes for now, just write down the meat you want to serve.
      • Consult the sales flyer for what’s on sale this week to save money.
  • Side Dish Schedule for the Week:
    • Monday _________, _________,_________,
    • Tuesday _________, _________,_________,
    • Wednesday _________, _________,_________,
    • Thursday _________, _________,_________,
    • Friday _________, _________,_________,
    • Saturday _________, _________,_________,
    • Sunday _________, _________,_________,
      • Tip: Don’t worry about recipes for now, just write down the sides you want to serve.
      • Consult the sales flyer for what’s on sale this week to save money.
  • Dessert Schedule for the Week:
    • Monday _________, _________,_________,
    • Tuesday _________, _________,_________,
    • Wednesday _________, _________,_________,
    • Thursday _________, _________,_________,
    • Friday _________, _________,_________,
    • Saturday _________, _________,_________,
    • Sunday _________, _________,_________,
      • Tip: Don’t worry about recipes for now, just write down the desserts you want to serve. Fruit is a great low-cal sub for rich desserts.
      • Consult the sales flyer for what’s on sale this week to save money.

Locate Recipes
Now it is time to find recipes! Try to base recipes on the food you have on hand. This will save you money. Use cookbooks or find something new online. Keep your recipes in a centrally located place, like a binder.

Display Menu
Put your meal plan in plain view in the kitchen. Use the refrigerator, or bulletin board, or dry erase board.

Shopping List
Next, write up your grocery list based on the recipes you plan to serve. Check to see if you have any of the ingredients already.

Go shopping! Buy ONLY the ingredients you will need for this week’s meals. However, if there is a great sale on meat—which can be frozen—then stock up.

Other Tips
Some people only plan dinner and no other meal. I have found it helpful to plan all three meals although I am more diligent with planning dinner. It really helps to control the budget.

Breakfast is usually a simple but protein-packed meal like eggs, protein shake, etc. Lunch is usually the previous evening’s dinner left overs.

Some people repeat their plans every 2 or 3 weeks to make planning easier. Other women make new menus each week for a month, then repeat the menus on a monthly basis.

Etiquette of Eating #10

He [Prophet Muhammad] would repeatedly urge his guests to eat, as generous hosts do, and as is seen in the hadeeth of Aboo Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu), related by al-Bukhaaree, about the story of drinking milk, where he repeatedly said to him, “Drink,” and he kept telling him to drink until he (the guest) said, “By the One Who sent you with the truth, I have no more room for it!”
