Many incidences hard to bear will happen to you.

To understand and succeed against the difficulties, you must know your religion. Here are three ayah (verses) from the Qur’aan. Their explanation comes from ibn Katheer.

Quran Ch 2:155-157 ♦ Surah alBaqarah Ayaat 155-157

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient). [155]

Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” [156]

They are those on whom are the Salawat (i.e., who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones. [157]

Explanation of ayah 155 Part 1: The Believer is Patient with the Affliction and thus gains a Reward

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient). [155]

Allah said in another Ayah:

So Allah made it taste extreme of hunger (famine) and fear. [16:112]

The frightened and the hungry persons show the effects of the affliction outwardly and this is why Allah has used here the word `Libas’ (cover or clothes) of fear and hunger.

In the Ayat above, Allah used the words:

{with something of fear, hunger,} meaning, a little of each

Then (Allah said),

{loss of wealth,} meaning, some of the wealth will be destroyed,

{lives} meaning, losing friends, relatives and loved ones to death,

{and fruits,} meaning, the gardens and the farms will not produce the usual or expected amounts.

This is why Allah said next:

{but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient).}

Journal Assignment

Write one benefit you gained from this week’s reading. And here are several questions to further explore in your journal.

  1. Why did Allah use the Arabic word ‘Libas’?
  2. What is a “test”?
  3. List as many tests as you can find in today’s lesson.
  4. Have you even been frightened? If so, describe it in a short paragraph or few sentences.
  5. Do some research. Either write about or create an art project on how the frightened and hungry show the effects of affliction outwardly.

Part 3 next week, insha’Allah
