Dear Whirly-Birds,
We can get so busy that we forget about the little things. But they do matter. Especially when it causes us to waste more time than necessary looking for something.
Here is what has worked for me to keep my handbag in functioning order.

How to Organize a Cluttered Purse
Supplies
- Messy purse
- Trash bag
- Small cosmetics bag(s), eyeglass case(s), wristlet, wallet, coin purse, small pencil pouch, mesh bags
- Travel-size containers
Instructions
Start by taking everything out!
Yes, E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G! Pull it all out!
Next, go through any papers in your purse. Sort receipts and paperwork into separate piles. Put trash directly into a trash bag.
Then, sort through the loose items. Make a pile for the things that you absolutely need, and a pile for the “just in case something happens” items. Store safety pins, lip balm, hand lotion, and other similar items in pouches that zip up; small cosmetics bags or cute pencil pouches work great for this.
Use travel-size containers instead of full-size bottles. And keep them in a zip-pouch, not loose in your purse.
If you need more than one zippy-pouch, group similar items together.
After that, go through your wallet. Sort any papers and/or receipts onto the same piles as the papers from your purse.
Get rid of most of your loose coins. Keep them in a jar on your dresser top.
Then remove anything else from your wallet that is not truly needed. Keep things like library cards, store reward cards, etc in a separate wallet that will always stay at home. Store this wallet with the rest of your household papers. Remove the specific item from this wallet only when you will be making a stop where the card or item will be used. Return the item to the wallet when you return home.
Use a cute but small pencil pouch to store a small notebook and pen or two. If your wallet has room for this, then use the wallet instead.
Now you should be ready to restock your handbag. But only with the items you truly need. And only if they are in zip pouches.
To stay organized, remove receipts immediately when you get home from a shopping trip and place them with the rest of your household paperwork.
Also consider downsizing to a smaller purse/bag to prevent clutter.
Make decluttering your purse a long-term habit by scheduling time to do weekly (or monthly) purse cleanings.
Here are some general de-cluttering tips
- make your intentions to please Allah
- set a timer for 15 minutes or use this Online-Stopwatch (click on Count Down)
- toss trash items into a plastic grocery store bag or trash bag
